ANGELS OF FREEDOM

"Bringing a caring LGBT+ scene to a compassionate city"

The Angels of Freedom is a community based initiative organised by volunteers and supported by Leeds City Council, British Transport Police and West Yorkshire Police.

Our aim is to provide visible support for the LGBT+ community based in the Freedom Quarter area of the city every Friday evening. Our volunteers provide conversations on support & social groups, activities and events in Leeds, along with just being a friendly approachable face on the bar scene for anyone wanting a chat.

WHO WE ARE

The Angels of Freedom community project launched on Friday 1 December 2017, having undertaken a year of research, planning and gaining experience of supporting people within the Night Time Economy.

Our group is led by founder Rob Wilson, with volunteers from a range of different backgrounds and community knowledge all working together to provide compassionate support to all members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans + community.

SUPPORT

One of our key activities is the Friday evening engagement. Every Friday from 6PM to 8PM you can find us in Queens Court, then from 8PM to 11 PM our team of volunteers are present around the Lower Briggate and Call Lane areas. There to engage with people visiting these areas, provide information about support services, social groups, and events in Leeds. Our volunteers are approachable and ready to have friendly conversations with anyone who needs advice or just a chat.

We emphasizes the importance of being a visible and approachable presence in the community. Our volunteers, often recognised by their distinctive raspberry jackets and transparent backpacks filled with sweets, create a welcoming atmosphere. This approach helps to tackle isolation and provides immediate support to those who might be struggling.

SOCIAL

We organise a variety of social activities for the Leeds LGBTQ+ communities. These include a monthly LGBTQ+ bar scene social at Queens Court & Pride, providing a supportive environment for socialising, playing card games and making new friends. We also host a monthly social space and support hub at Age UK Leeds, where attendees can enjoy free refreshments, board games, and friendly conversations.

Additionally, we offer weekly football training sessions in partnership with the Leeds United Foundation, welcoming all fitness and skill levels, along with supporting badminton sessions every Sunday at Armley Leisure Centre, aimed at beginners. Our Friday evening street engagement provides safety reassurance and promotes social opportunities in the Freedom Quarter.

These activities foster a sense of community and provide valuable support and social opportunities for LGBTQ+ people in Leeds.
